Some people think that economic progress is the only way to end poverty while others believe that it is causing damage to the environment and so should be stopped.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Some people argue that the only way to eliminate poverty is making economies grow, while others claim that it damages the environment and thus should come to a stop. I agree with the former point of view because economic advancement can create free educational opportunities for the poor.
On the one hand, it can be argued that economic growth increases global warming. A bigger economy means more economic activities, such as manufacturing cars and shipping goods. These activities produce large quantities of carbon dioxide, which warms the planet. Since rising temperatures can lead to the extinction of many animal species, economic development needs to be stopped to keep the ecosystem in balance. However, I disagree with this argument because many companies are becoming more and more environmentally responsible, and are aiming to become carbon neutral in the near future.
On the other hand, economic progress can make education free for the poor. Many people are living in poverty because they do not have any skill set valuable to employers. As an economy becomes stronger, the government will receive more tax revenue and thus will be able to allocate more money to its educational system to ensure even the poorest have the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to find a job. I think this is the only way to end poverty because other methods, such as donations from wealthy people, can only help the poor temporarily.
In conclusion, even though economic development accelerates climate change, I do not think it should cease because it enables governments to provide free education for poor people and therefore can eradicate poverty.
