Across the world there is a demand for additional housing, but the only construction space available is in rural areas. In my opinion, priority should be given to protecting these areas over building new homes there. Otherwise, food production and the balance of the ecosystem may suffer.

Firstly, increased housing development in rural areas can negatively affect the food production industry. The countryside is where farmers grow crops and raise animals for slaughter. If they lost their farmland to real estate development, they would have to stop all their agricultural activities. Given that the world’s arable land is already shrinking, the practice in question would magnify these problems and make it more difficult to supply food to the planet’s growing population.

Additionally, the loss of countryside and rural areas can result in an imbalanced ecosystem. Vacuuming up the habitats of animals living in these spaces for the benefit of humans will have negative effects on the energy and food cycles. For example, clearing forests for housing development may displace native bat species residing in the trees. This will reduce their population and, in turn, decrease the pollination of nearby plants which serve as food to other animals. As we depend on a well-balanced ecosystem to provide crucial resources, including but not limited to clean air, freshwater, and medicine, we must conserve the countryside and find alternative ways to solve the housing problem.

In conclusion, it is crucial to protect the countryside from housing development to ensure adequate agricultural output and to keep the ecosystem in balance. (256 Words)
