How plastic bottles are recycled

Sample Essay

The diagram illustrates how plastic bottles are recycled.

Overall, the recycling of plastic bottles is a man-made, cyclical process that consists of use, collection, sorting, crushing, cleaning, pelletizing, making new plastic products, and reuse.

After plastic bottles are used, they are discarded in recycling bins, waiting for trucks to transport them to a recycling plant. Once there, they are sorted and those that can be reused are compressed into blocks. The blocks are then broken down by a crushing machine into small pieces, which are subsequently cleaned to remove any residue.

The small clean pieces produced in the last stage are then poured into a machine where they are turned into pellets. The machine also heats and melts the pellets, which creates plastic raw material. Finally, the raw material is made into different plastic products, including pens, bottles, and reusable shopping bags. After these products are used, they go through the recycling process all over again.

How to Write the Overview

In your overview, if you say the recycling process is cyclical, you have to have a complete cycle that goes back to the start: use, collection, sorting, crushing, cleaning, pelletizing, making new plastic products, and reuse. The diagram hints at the step “use” by showing the user putting an empty bottle into the bin with no description. You have to mention “use” and “reuse”. Otherwise, you don’t have a complete cycle and you can’t say the process is cyclical.

Step 3 | Recycling center -> Recycling plant

Example   They are then transported to a recycling plant by truck.

Step 5 | Crushing -> Breaking down/Grinding

Example   The blocks are then broken down into/ground into small pieces by a crushing machine.

Step 5 | Washing -> Cleaning

Example   They are subsequently cleaned to remove any residue.

Step 6 | Producing plastic pellets -> Be turned/transformed/converted into plastic pellets

Example   The clean small pieces are then poured into a machine where they are turned into pellets.

Step 7 | Heating pellets -> Melting pellets
Step 7 | To form raw material -> To produce/create raw material

Example   The pellets are melted in order to produce/create raw material for new products.

  1. The given diagram shows information on how used plastic bottles are recycled. In general, the illustration presents a continuous process with nine steps.
At first, used bottles are deposited by the users in a movable big sized bin. Then, all the gathered bottles are collected by a covered truck for carrying towards recycling centre. In the centre, staffs sort recyclable bottles from unusable bottles and kept them in separate boxes.
Later, selected bottles are compressed into different blocks. The blocks are placed in a two-wheeler crushing machine to be brocken into smaller pieces and these are washed in a large size water tank to remove wastages.
The washed small plastic pieces, then, are poured in a cubic machine to produce plastic pellets. The pellets go through a heating process to form raw materials. The materials usually are kept in a storage and several plastic made products like bottles, food carrier, T-shirts, pens, bags, etc. are produced for everyday usages. After consuming, reused products are deposited again in the bin. The same recycling process is continued.

  2. The diagram illustrates how plastic bottles are recycled.
Overall, there are 9 steps in this process cycle, starting from collection of used plastics to manufacturing new products from the recycled material.

The process starts when consumers throw away used bottles in to the collection bins. These are then sent to a sorting centre by vehicles, where plastics that are suitable are manually selected. The selection is then compressed in to blocks, and the blocks are crushed in to small pieces.

The end product from the last step is washed in tank to clean and these small pieces are processed in a machine which puts pellets of plastic. Heating of these pellets makes the raw material which then used to make various customer products such as bottles, boxes, etc. As the consumer reuse these items, it starts out the cycle of recycling again.

    1. Good essay. I think you may get a 7, but the overview can definitely be improved. Please read the examiner’s comment on Page 133 of Cambridge IELTS 16.

  3. The diagram illustrates how plastic bottles get recycled.

Overall, the cycle comprises of nine processes that start by usage, collection, sorting, crushing, production of pellets, making new products, and ending up getting reused by people.

After the usage of plastics, people get rid of them in special bins, and then recycling trucks transport them to a recycling center. In this center, the sorting process is accomplished manually after which only the valid ones, get compressed into big plastic blocks. These chunks of plastics are then ground into smaller parts and get washed by the same crushing machine. Consequently, another heavy machine transforms these cleaned parts into plastic pellets.

The manufactured pellets subsequently are exposed to heat and get turned into plastic raw material. Finally, the raw materials get processed into different reusable products like shirts, pencils, and plastic containers. After the utilization of these products, they go again through the same process.

    Hoping to get feedback, please.

      1. Sorry for the late reply. You have a good command of English. Your essay is very easy to follow. I think you can get a 6.5.

Overview: “start with” and “end with” are used to introduce the first and last steps only.

        Details Paragraphs:
✖“These chunks of plastics are then ground into smaller parts and get washed by the same crushing machine.”
As you can see from the diagram, the crushing machine only crushes them. It doesn’t wash them.

        ✖ “Consequently”

        ✖“subsequently are”
        ✔are subsequently

        ✖“processed into”
        ✔made into

  4. The diagram depicts the information pertaining to steps involved in the conversion of used plastic into useful products.

It can be clearly seen that in the initial phase plastic waste is thrown by the masses into dustbins, fron where it is collected by the recycling industry with the help of a big truck. After delivery to the recycling center, manual sorting is done, under this, material suitable for the further process is kept and rest idla recycled. Following this, the sorted plastic is compressed into blocks.

Moving further, crushing of the material compressed in the previous step, is conducted along with its washing. In the sixth stage, pellets of plastic are formed, followed by the application of heat to transform these into raw material , which is then utilizes to manufacture, either plastic bottles, or bags. This process again starts with discarding of used products by people.

Overall, it is a circular procedure, which starts again with each ending, this consists of mainly seven steps.

  5. The second portion of this task; if I write “Looking from an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that……..” instead of “Overall,” . So it will be correct ?
