You Have Just Read an Article

Published on October 11, 2022

You have just read an article in a national newspaper which claims that town centres in your country all look very similar to each other. You don’t fully agree with this opinion.

Write a letter to the editor of the newspaper. In your letter

  • say which points in the article you agree with
  • explain ways in which your town centre is different from most other town centres
  • offer to give a guided tour of your town to the writer of the article

This formal letter question is from Cambridge IELTS 16 General Training Test 4 Writing Task 1.

Sample Letter 204 Words

Dear Sir or Madam,

I just finished reading Mr. Cook’s article in your newspaper. He was correct to point out that Dutch city centers are often very similar to one another in some key aspects. It is true that buildings in Dutch city centers are usually constructed out of brick, and it is also true that there is almost always a church or cathedral on the town square.

However, I respectfully disagree that Dutch cities are monotonous! I’ve traveled all over the country, and Amsterdam is quite unique! The weekend market is much bigger than any other city in the country and features unique street foods found nowhere else. Do I even need to mention the canals? It’s like having a river flow down every street. You can see boats traveling up and down them. They give Amsterdam a character of its own.

I would love to take Mr. Cook on a tour of the city! Let me know if he is in the area. I could show him the tea shop with the best tea in town, the Chinese grocery store where I get my ingredients, and many other places. Amsterdam isn’t bland or monotonous. Let me show him!

Yours sincerely,

Edward Smith
